So far, the most important concepts and tools that I have learned about in this class have been the A/V programs, how game design teams work, the different careers in the game design industry, and the new techniques in 3DS Max that I have been working on so far the past few weeks. The A/V techniques will be useful later on if I make my own game and I need to make a promotional video as well as to update my show reel to make it better later down the road. Knowledge of the game industry will be helpful when I am figuring out what I want to do in the game industry and how it works when I get a job in the game industry. The extra 3DS Max tools will help me for my Advanced Studies project next year, which will be creating my own 3D video game, and possibly for college if I try to major in 3D modeling or animation. The curriculum this year is alright as it is so far, but it could use a bit more of an in depth look at the A/V techniques in order to know how the various tools in the programs work so that the Foley Artist assignment isn't as difficult.

Over the past week or so, me and my classmates have been given the task of being a foley artist in order to create our own sound effects to go with a soundless video. So far, the process of making my own sound effects is pretty cool but it can be very boring when most of the sound effects are readily available, such as a door opening which doesn't require too much effort to record and edit. However, some sound effects, like a gun shot, which is required for this project, will require some creativity since I don't have a gun that I can just shoot off and record the sound with. The hardest part of the project will be making up sounds that aren't readily available and making them sound as if they are the real deal. As for the easiest part of the project, I think finding the soundtrack for the video was pretty easy. Right off the bat, I knew I wanted to make the video more intense since it involved an assassination which can be a very tense situation. I was able to find myself a royalty free bit of music called The Complex on the Incompetech website (link below if you want to listen to it) that i find will add to this sense of tension with the constant drum beat and agressive synth to accompany it. This project has helped me get a better understanding of Audtion more than it has Premiere since I actually need to go into more depth with the effects menu inside of Audition in order to modifiy my sound to exactly the right way I need it to be. Premire is just the same old drag and drop that I used when I made other projects inside of Premiere so far this year. I will post the finished product of my project in the near future so look out for that in the My Work tab for Advanced Game Art Design.
Based on what I was able to find online, linear editing involves editing audio and video and a certain order or sequence that can only be accessed sequentially regardless of what device the video and audio was recorded on. However, Nonlinear editing allows someone to access any frame in a video clip regardless of its order in the sequence which allows editors to copy and paste clips and modify them easier than that of linear editing. It is important to understand how to use nonlinear editing software for the game design industry since the methods of linear editing has become something of the past and has nearly gone obsolete and will most likely never be touched in the game design industry where the current technology is prevalent. As of right now, I have enjoyed working with audio in game design since it is very straight forward when it comes to editing things like voice overs and applying sound effects like distortion to an audio clip and audio editing is something I find very interesting in general.
Over the past few weeks, I have been working with both Adobe Audition and Premiere in order to understand how to edit audio and video. The skills that I will gain from learning how to edit audio and video will possibly help me in my career as a game designer in the future because you need to have knowledge of Adobe Audition or other audio editing softwares to be a sound designer and you need to have knowledge of Adobe Premiere in order to create promotional videos for your game or if you want to edit a cutscene within your game. These skills can help me through the rest of my game design classes at DSA since there will most likely be sound in my game or the class project that will be done in Advanced Studies that needs to be edited and there will most likely be some sort of video editing part that goes along with the game or class project as well. These skills will be helpful to me now and they will be helpful to me in the near and distant future if I decide that I want to work as a sound designer.
