Through Hour of Code, I believe that I will be more prepared to learn a more intensive programming language as a part of being a game designer. Hour of Code helped me to be prepared because it gave me insight into how a programmer has to think in order to make successful programs. Also, the website gives you the option to look at the actual Java code for the program you made using the website which also gave me insight into how a program is written. A great way for me to improve my coding skills without a graphical interface such as Hour of Code is through books, videos, and experimenting. If you purchase books on programming and watch videos on how to code different things like how to move forward, you can use those to experiment inside the programming software and learn how different strands of code work with each other. If I was willing to fork over some more money, I would look for classes that taught coding to rising programmers to help further my knowledge of coding, but I don't have the time or money to do that.

Because level design is going to become a part of who I am as a game designer in the future, it would be helpful to decide how I would come up with a level design idea and how I would build on said idea. Based on this Gamasutra article, http://goo.gl/KnnAng, level design involves an increase in variation between each level through different rules or elements. The reason for this is to keep players interested in the game by limiting the amount of repetition inside the game. I agree with the way the author of the article does his level design which involves creating a 'first playable' level which shows the core mechanics of the game. After that, you start to brainstorm some concepts that could be added to the game to further enhance the gaming experience or make it more complex. Then just by simply changing up the way the level looks and adding another concept or rule into the next level, the game will become more complex and interesting with every new level. I believe that this is a great way to design levels because it makes it easier on the level designer by limiting how much the designer has to change in previous levels by making each new level have a small difference from the last one. Also I believe that this level design method would help me be more organized because it lets me see what I have added into the game to make it have variety and what I could add next to make the game have even more variety. |
